Silica dust exposure in the workplace
Backbench debate (separate chamber, no votes)
A Westminster Hall debate on occupational silica dust exposure, sponsored by Liberal Democrat Liz Jarvis. The session will examine the health risks posed by silica dust inhalation in workplaces, workplace safety standards, and what action is needed to protect workers in affected industries.
Silica dust exposure causes serious and often irreversible lung diseases, including silicosis and lung cancer. The debate reflects concern that current protections may be inadequate, affecting thousands of workers in construction, stoneworking, foundries, and demolition across the UK. Better enforcement or regulation could prevent occupational disease and associated healthcare costs.
