Women and Equalities Committee: Female genital mutilation (FGM)

Committee hears from witnesses

The Women and Equalities Committee will hear oral evidence on access to reconstructive surgery for women who have undergone female genital mutilation (FGM). The inquiry examines whether the NHS and private healthcare providers currently offer sufficient surgical options, the barriers patients face in accessing these services, and what policy or funding changes might improve provision across the UK.

FGM affects an estimated 137,000 women and girls in England and Wales. Reconstructive surgery can reduce physical pain, infection risk, and psychological trauma, but access remains patchy and often requires women to navigate complex NHS pathways or pay privately. This inquiry will inform parliamentary debate on whether dedicated funding, clearer referral pathways, or legislative change is needed to ensure equitable access to this healthcare.
