Labour Party MP for Glasgow North East.

Burke broke with her party twice in one day in July 2025, voting against the welfare cuts bill at both committee and final stages — making her one of a significant minority of Labour MPs who refused to back the Universal Credit and Personal Independence Payment Bill. That rebellion put her on the side of disability rights campaigners who argued the government was cutting PIP entitlements before completing its own review. She also voted against replacing first-past-the-post with proportional representation in December 2024, bucking a trend among some Labour backbenchers. Locally, she has drawn positive coverage for securing "game-changing" regeneration funding for Springburn and Sighthill, pushing a housing association to demolish derelict homes left empty for two decades, and speaking in parliament about assisted dying, sharing a personal account to argue for reform.
Burke votes with Labour around 99% of the time, making her welfare rebellion the clear outlier. Her voting profile shows strong alignment on workers' rights and progressive taxation, but she sits well below her party average on disability benefits protection — reflecting genuine divergence rather than consistent rebel instincts. Her 58% participation rate is below the Commons average, though Scottish MPs face longer travel demands. Speeches concentrate on economy and jobs, social care, and health, consistent with the needs of a constituency that includes some of Glasgow's most deprived areas. She sits on the Scottish Affairs Committee.
Burke has represented Glasgow North East since the July 2024 election. Pre-election coverage was negative — a Herald story criticised her for missing a city budget meeting and a Labour conference during the campaign — but her post-election local coverage has been consistently constructive. The welfare rebellion is the most significant data point for constituents tracking her independence from the party whip. Speech and voting data are available from her election onwards; longer-term patterns will only emerge as the parliament continues.
Maureen Burke is the Labour MP for Glasgow North East, and has been an MP continually since 4 July 2024.
