Labour Party MP for Huddersfield.

A loyalist with local roots, Harpreet Uppal has voted with Labour on every recorded division since entering Parliament in 2024 — a 100% party alignment across more than 500 votes. Her most visible recent activity has been on defence: she backed the government's position on all five Armed Forces Bill divisions in June and voted against the opposition's motion on defence spending, supporting the Prime Minister's amended version instead. She also backed limiting debate time on the National Security (State Threats) Bill, consistent with her low alignment on parliamentary scrutiny measures (17%), and voted against an amendment that would have added judicial oversight safeguards to that legislation.
Her voting record shows a distinctive shape. She is firmly pro-worker (85%) and backs progressive taxation at every opportunity (100%), but scores very low on civil liberties (15%) and business-friendly measures (14%). Most notably, she deviates from Labour colleagues on assisted dying, supporting easier access at a rate 30 percentage points above the party average — suggesting this is a genuine personal position rather than a leadership steer. Her 153 parliamentary contributions span economy and jobs, social care, crime, defence, and local government, placing her above average for Commons participation at 90%.
News coverage from Huddersfield points to active constituency work: visits to the Huddersfield Giants training facility, Kirklees College, and the opening of a new community diagnostic centre. Her advocacy for Rugby League in Parliament is noted locally. She holds no select committee seats, which limits her formal scrutiny role. Overall, she is a highly active, loyalist backbencher with a strong local presence and one notable personal deviation — on assisted dying — from her party's central tendency.
Harpreet Uppal is the Labour MP for Huddersfield, and has been an MP continually since 4 July 2024.
