Media and Sport, what steps her Department is taking to help ensure that hosting UEFA EURO 2028 supports communities.

Reply

Football reaches communities like nothing else. The department is working with partners to develop the largest-ever UEFA EURO Community Programme, backed by a social impact fund of around £45 million, which will ensure the impact supports communities far beyond the tournament itself. Plans for the programme and fund are in development, and more details will be shared in due course.

Commonwealth and Development Affairs, what diplomatic steps he is taking to support a ceasefire agreement in Gaza.

Reply

We are clear that the first step to ending this terrible conflict is an immediate ceasefire, and we continue to push all parties to achieve this urgently. All parties must re-engage with negotiations to get the hostages out, surge aid, and secure a permanent end to this conflict. The Foreign Secretary has visited Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories three times since taking office and is working with partners on a framework for peace to turn a ceasefire into lasting security and peace for Palestinians and Israelis. The Foreign Secretary discussed the dire situation in Gaza with the Qatari Foreign Minister on 25 June, Israeli Foreign Minister Sa'ar on 23 August and Secretary of State Rubio on 2 September.

How much and what proportion of the increased defence budget will be spent on developing the UK's cyber offensive capabilities.

Reply

His Majesty's Treasury is currently undertaking the second phase of the Spending Review, which will be announced on 11 June 2025. This will set Departmental budgets for three years from 2026-27 for RDEL and four years for CDEL, including for the Ministry of Defence. The increase in defence spending will fund critical investments in areas like autonomous systems, AI, cyber, rebuilding stockpiles and munition reserves. The full details will be set out in the Strategic Defence Review.

The Government is committed to fostering a vibrant, competitive, and innovative financial services sector. If she will hold discussions with Standard Chartered on steps to help Hong Kongers with British National (Overseas) passports access their Mandatory Provident Fund (MPF) retirement savings.

Reply

This government is deeply committed to supporting members of the Hong Kong community who have relocated to the UK. We are aware that individuals who have chosen to take up the British National (Overseas) route are having difficulties accessing their Mandatory Provident Fund from Hong Kong. Whilst documentary requirements for withdrawing funds are a matter for the Hong Kong authorities, officials have raised this issue directly with the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government and the Hong Kong MPF Schemes Authority. We have urged them to facilitate early draw down of funds as is the case for other Hong Kong residents who move overseas permanently and have made clear such discrimination of BN(O)s is unacceptable.
