A former police officer turned Labour MP, Hinder has generated controversy beyond Westminster in recent months. In January 2026 he was "blasted" for inflammatory comments about pop star Meghan Trainor's use of a surrogate, widely reported as a misjudgement that undermined his credibility. Earlier, his remark that he would "not be disappointed" if universities went bust attracted sharp criticism given that Lancashire's economy depends on higher education for jobs and skills. More positively, an April 2026 speech drawing on his frontline policing experiences was described as an emotional and detailed plea for systemic reform -- consistent with a parliamentary focus that sees crime and economy-jobs dominate his 51 contributions across 37 debates.

Hinder votes with Labour 97.3% of the time, but his clearest deviations came on assisted dying: in June 2025 he voted against the bill at Third Reading and backed amendments tightening eligibility criteria, placing him 31 percentage points more sceptical of the legislation than his average Labour colleague. He also broke ranks in October 2025 to support greater scrutiny of sustainable aviation fuel supply chains, a vote the government opposed. His 82% participation rate is modestly below the Commons average. Stance data suggests he is strongly pro-workers'-rights and pro-progressive-taxation, but notably low on pro-business (16%) and parliamentary-scrutiny (14%) measures.
