Justice Committee: Access to Justice
Committee hears from witnesses
The Justice Committee will hear oral evidence on access to justice—the ability of people to use the legal system and obtain justice when needed. This inquiry examines barriers to accessing courts, legal advice, and representation, particularly for those with limited means. The session will explore how funding constraints, legal aid reforms, and court closures affect different groups' ability to pursue claims or defend themselves.
Access to justice is fundamental to the rule of law and affects millions of people involved in civil disputes, criminal defence, family law, and administrative proceedings. Barriers to justice—whether through cost, geography, or lack of legal support—disproportionately harm low-income households and rural communities, potentially leaving disputes unresolved and undermining public confidence in the courts.
