5 May 2026EducationcelebratoryStudents at Cockington Primary School had plenty of questions for me on Friday, including thoughtful letters from Year 6 students. I also spoke to students and teachers about increasing pedestrian safety in the vicinity. It was a real pleasure to talk to such curious and intelligent young people.
3 May 2026EnvironmentcelebratoryGreen Futures Solutions at the University of Exeter are looking to create the Climate Change Institute, which will be the largest in the UK, therefore providing many jobs. I had a very productive conversation with Stuart Brocklehurst, the Director of Business Engagement and Innovation.

30 Apr 2026Crime & PolicingempatheticTwo members of the Jewish community were stabbed in North London yesterday. Both are currently in Hospital in a stable condition. These sorts of shocking acts of antisemitic violence are deeply deeply troubling. Everyone deserves to be safe here in the UK.
29 Apr 2026Health & NHSempatheticKayleigh Bovey was told her son had a life-limiting condition over a video call. She is now campaigning to make sure that parents get increased support to deal with life-limiting diagnoses. You can support her campaign by signing her petition here buff.ly/sNxof9L #Torbay #NHS
29 Apr 2026Health & NHSmeasuredWe need increased access to defibrillators in this country, alongside increased awareness of resuscitation. I met with Esther Kuku and James Cant from the Resuscitation Council UK on Tuesday to discuss awareness initiatives for resuscitation, such as the October heart campaign.
28 Apr 2026Culture & CommunitycelebratoryIn lighter news next week is David Attenborough's 100th birthday! 25,000 people, including myself, have already signed the 38 Degrees petition calling for a permanent statue of Sir David to be built. You can add your support to the petition here: you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/a-...
28 Apr 2026Health & NHSmeasuredTorbay Hospital Staff do an amazing job, but the level of savings and cuts required across Devon NHS Trusts and the lack of financial support for the Hospital, despite NICs increases, is extremely concerning. I tabled a parliamentary motion to address this yesterday.
28 Apr 2026Social CareangryHundreds of thousands of vulnerable carers have wracked up debts of up to £20,000 thanks to the carers' allowance overpayments scandal. I asked the Government to stop applying carers penalties until they have completed their review of overpayments cases.
27 Apr 2026Crime & PolicingmeasuredFraud is now the most common crime in the UK, and scammers rely on messages that create urgency, confusion, or pressure. I’m supporting @takefivestopfraud and encouraging Torbay residents to stay alert to the signs of fraud and #ReadBetweenTheLies. Find out more at: www.takefive-stopfraud.org.uk.
27 Apr 2026TransportcelebratoryLocal leaders will be soon able to prohibit pavement parking in England. This is a real win for all pavement users, from parents with pushchairs, to those in wheelchairs, to the partially-sighted. I'm very pleased to have been a part of this successful campaign. #PavementParking
26 Apr 2026Health & NHScelebratoryThe voting for the Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust’s Our People’s Choice Awards is open and you can vote for one of three amazing teams nominated by patients, carers and the public. To find out more about each team and place your vote you can click here:
25 Apr 2026Culture & CommunitycelebratoryFrances Grey at Torquay Tennis club has won the Lexus Game Changer Award at the LTA Awards. Frances has led disability and community programmes across the County, as well as making tournaments more accessible, building strong charity partnerships and making a county-wide impact as an Open Court Lead
23 Apr 2026Tax & Public FinancesmeasuredThe Government should be ensuring that people can invest their pensions in things that matter to our communities like regenerating our town centres and social rented housing. I spoke in Parliament to encourage the Government to enhance these opportunities, but to caution them against mandation.
22 Apr 2026Cost of LivingmeasuredThe Government should be taking the Cost of Living Crisis seriously. Along with the Liberal Democrats I am proposing that we combat Trumpflation (the economic damage caused by Trump's war in Iran) by cutting fuel duty by 12p and capping bus fares at £1. #CostofLivingCrisis #Trumpflation #Transport
22 Apr 2026Culture & CommunitycelebratoryOver £300 million is being invested in building or renovating youth services in the most deprived areas. I attended the Youth Investment Fund's event yesterday in Parliament to talk to young people and youth leaders about how to support the delivery of youth services in Torbay.
21 Apr 2026Health & NHSmeasured2,637,578 'procedures' using animals were carried out in British laboratories throughout 2024. But experiments on animals cannot accurately predict whether new drugs will be safe for humans. I discussed Herbie's law in Parliament today, which would phase out animal experiments in medical research.
21 Apr 2026Health & NHSmeasuredThe Multiple Sclerosis Think Again survey reports that almost two thirds of respondents feel judged or treated differently because of their MS. This week I tabled an Early Day Motion in Parliament to support MS Awareness Week. Let's work together towards better understanding of the realities of MS
21 Apr 2026MP & ParliamentangryThe Prime Minister is blaming Mandelson's appointment on the Foreign Office. Yet after the budget leaks we saw the head of the OBR resign due to an error by a member of his team. I asked Keir Starmer yesterday what it would take for him to carry the can? #Starmer #PrimeMinister #Mandelson
20 Apr 2026Health & NHSmeasuredTorbay Hospital has launched a voluntary redundancy scheme today. This news will no doubt alarm many staff members who feel pressure to leave their jobs, and will also heavily impact the quality of care received by patients. I have written to Wes Streeting, expressing concerns about this.
20 Apr 2026Culture & CommunitycelebratoryMid Devon Cycling Club are now a Limitless Hub, which means that they provide cycling opportunities for disabled people, regardless of age, impairment and ability. It was lovely to visit the Club this weekend to get involved in their Inclusive Cycling Day to mark the club's new status.
19 Apr 2026EducationmeasuredOur current SEND system is broken and it is failing children each day. I attended the West of England School for Children with Little or No Sight in Exeter myself, and so I have a personal commitment to supporting improvements to SEND provision. Mainstream & specialist capacity should be expanded.
19 Apr 2026Health & NHSmeasuredWe need to remedy the NHS Dentistry Crisis in Torbay. Much of this is due to the broken NHS Dental Contract. If we fix this, by using flexible commissioning to meet patient needs, we can draw more dentists from the private sector to the NHS. I am running a petition to fix the NHS Dental Contract
18 Apr 2026Culture & CommunitycelebratoryToday, I visited Torquay Library and cut their cake, designed by staff member Carol, to celebrate 100 years of the Children's Library. They have raised a fantastic amount of money through bake sales and other initiatives, which will be invested into upgrades to the Children's Library.
18 Apr 2026Crime & PolicingangryThe number of shoplifting cases recorded in Devon and Cornwall has jumped from 3,813 to 11,114 from 2021 to 25. But only 19.65% of cases have been charged in 2025. We need a return to genuine community policing. The Liberal Democrats are pushing for a Police Counter Promise to keep down crime.
16 Apr 2026MP & ParliamentmeasuredMy latest pop-up surgery was outside Tesco at Fleet Street in Torquay town centre. Matters that arose included parking near schools, the ongoing impacts of the Iran war and assisted dying. If I can be of any assistance, please do reach out to me at steve.darling.mp@parliament.uk or 07908 349347.
16 Apr 2026Tax & Public FinancesmeasuredMandating whether and where people's pensions should be invested is wrong. Our economy works best without state interference in investment. I spoke in Parliament yesterday to reflect on my father's struggles with his pension savings in the 2008 crisis and to urge the Minister against mandation.
15 Apr 2026Culture & CommunitycelebratoryChildren and Families in Grief, National Foundation for Retired Service Animals, South West Blood Bikes, Samaritans of South Devon and Guide Dogs for the Blind are all excellent charities that do really important work in Torbay or nationally. I have given recently to all of the charities above.
15 Apr 2026OthermeasuredThe Postcode Lottery has raised over £90M for animal charities. Since charities now face a difficult fundraising landscape, the funds that charity lotteries raise are vital. However, charity lotteries are the only type of gambling/ fundraising subject to sales caps. I am campaigning against this.
14 Apr 2026Social CaremeasuredTorbay Mencap supports children and adults with learning disabilities and their families. I met with them recently to discuss employment for people with learning disabilities. We had a very productive conversation covering issues with Access to Work and Carer's Allowance and supported internships.
