20 Mar 2025 Business of the House

I valued the comments of the shadow Leader of the House, and of my hon. Friend the Member for Wokingham (Clive Jones). I offer my condolences, and my time, on a separate occasion, to discuss the ideas for the future that the shadow Leader of the House set out. BT has threatened to close down the K6 telephone box in Sha

I thank the hon. Member for his intervention, and I am pleased to associate myself with the sentiment behind his remarks. I think it was my right hon. Friend the Member for Kingston and Surbiton (Ed Davey), when he was Energy Minister in the coalition, who scoped out the possibility of an offshore ring main for East An

Does my hon. Friend agree that hospitals face challenges not just with their state or accessibility but with the affordability of housing for NHS workers?

I do think that more should be done. It is a classic example both of unintended consequences from the explosion of a successful tech platform that was originally designed for people to let out spare rooms and is now a mainstream booking platform, and of the inevitable fact that legislation moves more slowly than life.

It is not ideological; we must be pragmatic in these things. The right sort of holiday lets can bring in welcome tourism to North Norfolk, but there is a safety issue regarding regulation, which I am very sympathetic to. I would be very interested in talking in more detail about our shared interest in this matter at an

I make absolutely no comment on the latter question, but I welcome the hon. Member’s contribution—no advance sight was given of my speech. Her presence here serves to remind us all that it is not just MPs representing coastal communities who have a stake in their prosperity. I thank her for her almost perfectly timed w

T4. Farmers in North Norfolk are an incredible bunch who have shown resilience through tough times and are still innovating and diversifying, but there are more tough times ahead. What one thing does the Secretary of State think my farmers should be doing to secure their future in the face of so many challenges?

I am immensely grateful to Members from across the House for their contributions and for echoing my call. I want to mention a couple of points that I thought were exceptionally noteworthy. My hon. Friend the Member for Torbay (Steve Darling) and the hon. Member for South West Devon (Rebecca Smith) spoke about the pride

I beg to move, That this House has considered coastal communities. I am delighted to be leading my first ever debate in this Chamber, on the vital topic of coastal communities. I am very grateful to Members from across the House who supported my application for the debate, and I thank the Backbench Business Committee f

I thank the hon. Member for his contribution. I am a little surprised. I am not too familiar with Reform’s tax policies, but I am not sure whether that is just me or most of us. Nevertheless, I hope that I have done my neighbour, the hon. Member for Boston and Skegness (Richard Tice), a favour by raising some of the ch

19 Mar 2025Transport Committee — Oral Evidence (HC 522)

Thinking specifically about the inspection regime that came in in 2023, which I know some of you have alluded to already, the first question is: has it made things easier to get fixed?

As a supplementary, these are two sides of the same coin. This Committee has heard, in quite a few different contexts, some of the challenges of the way Government services and/or these penalties through legislation are price-fixed and, therefore, do not quite do the job they could; £50 is not a lot of money. Thank you, Neil. Adam, you mentioned minor cost saving for the utility company but major disruption impact. As with all things, the task will expand to fill the time it is given. Can you explain a bit more about why the task expands to fill the time it is given? Whether it is five days or seven days or three days, it w

Your guys carry stuff that does all those different tasks, don’t they, on the back of a highways van? Even with a third-party private contractor, they are able to do excavation, traffic management, reinstatement and probably the repair when you go out.

The Bacton energy hub in my constituency is undergoing a green transition, which I support because I believe in protecting our natural environment and boosting our economy through net zero—two things the Conservatives seem to have abandoned. Green hydrogen at Bacton needs wind power to be brought in from the coast. Wil

I am sure colleagues have other questions to build on some of that. To go back to what the Chair was just encouraging me to move us on to, you have touched on it, Caroline. It is the slightly labyrinthine legislative context. I have met one of my community transport operators and I could not believe some of the permuta

12 Mar 2025Sustainable Farming Incentive

The sudden completion of the SFI scheme will be a worry for many farmers and local people. I am also very concerned by reports that the NFU was given only 30 minutes’ notice on such a huge change. To give my local farmers the confidence that they need, can the Minister assure them that DEFRA will learn lessons from the

It might be beyond even Deloitte to suggest that they might be commissioned to build a word processing software tool for a fee. I will leave that bit there. Thank you for that. Coming back to the question of funding, could a structured fare solution help to deliver more long-term financial sustainability for the sector

You mentioned earlier the potential for some of the clarification of the lack of reference to CT in the bus Bill coming forward in the statutory guidance. That sounds like an important point for this Committee to consider as we continue to scrutinise the bus Bill, quite separately from this. I have two more supplementa
