Taking that a little bit further, I read in my briefing here that in November the Chinese Government announced a ban on all Japanese seafood products and restricted the exchange of cultural products, including freezing licences for Japanese films and cancelling concerts by Japanese musicians. In January, China announce

20 Jan 2026Diego Garcia Military Base and British Indian Ocean Territory Bill

On the security of the base, does my hon. Friend recall the visit to Washington DC that I think we both went on last year as members of the Foreign Affairs Committee? We spoke to many American interlocutors, including State Department officials. Over the course of an entire week in the US capital, not a single US inter

Professor Hosoya, have Prime Minister Takaichi’s statements on the Taiwan contingency altered Japan-China relations?

20 Jan 2026Foreign Affairs Committee — Oral Evidence (HC 1174)

Mr Ward, is there something to be learned from the point that Professor Delamotte was making about not over-politicising the debate and having a serious conversation about national security behind closed doors?

20 Jan 2026Foreign Affairs Committee — Oral Evidence (HC 1174)

Ambassador, one area that other members of the Committee might be interested to know is what role members of the German Bundestag play in scrutinising the Government around fulfilling commitments that are outlined in the China strategy.

Professor Delamotte, I do not know if you had any reflections on what Professor Hosoya has said about the relationship.

20 Jan 2026Foreign Affairs Committee — Oral Evidence (HC 1174)

You talk about Japan’s relationship with Taiwan and Japan’s relationship with China. Of course, Prime Minister Takaichi has called a snap early general election to take place on 8 February. How prominently do you think the relations with China and with Taiwan are going to feature in that general election campaign over

I think that that is certainly possible; it was the case in the debate that took place at the end of 2024. I mentioned sub judice in my comments. It is something that I am very mindful of, and it is how I comport myself in the Chamber as well. It is something that I can work on with fellow applicants for the debate.

Thank you, Chair. I declare an interest as the chair of the all-party parliamentary group on anti-corruption and responsible tax. Alongside 21 colleagues across all the parties, I am seeking a debate on the egregious phenomenon of lawyers behaving badly by using spurious legal threats to try to shut down public disclos

19 Jan 2026Sale of Fireworks

My hon. Friend is making a very powerful speech about the need for change in the law, and the impact on humans and animals. One of my constituents got in touch with me to talk about the massive detrimental impact that the irresponsible launching of fireworks had during bonfire night weekend. She talked about how the ne

19 Jan 2026 Arctic Security

As a proud member of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, I thank the Foreign Secretary for her visit to our Marines at Camp Viking in Norway, and for her unequivocal stance in support of collective security with NATO at its heart. I welcome the Rycroft review of foreign interference in our politics. In the context of NATO

19 Jan 2026Local Elections: Cancellation

The truth of the matter is that there is actually a lot of false information flying around—does the Minister agree? In Bolton, we are very much looking forward to having local elections in May. Can the Minister confirm that that has always been the case, as it has been in the other nine boroughs in Greater Manchester,
