5 Jul 2026Housing & PlanningmeasuredDuring pre-legislative scrutiny of our draft Commonhold and Leasehold Reform Bill, we sought evidence on negotiated (quid pro quo) leases and the case for a limited ground rent cap exemption. We are now seeking further technical feedback on this issue 👇🏻 www.gov.uk/government/c....

This Labour government is delivering the biggest increase in social and affordable housebuilding in a generation.
11 Jun 2026Defence & SecurityempatheticI had the privilege of serving as John Healey’s PPS in opposition back in 2015/16. He is a man of deep principle and has been an outstanding Defence Secretary. I’m saddened that he felt he had no choice but to leave government.
10 Jun 2026Housing & PlanningcelebratoryHousing-led regeneration has a vital role to play in boosting housing supply, driving economic growth and creating thriving communities across the North. A real pleasure to speak at the launch of the Northern Housing Consortium's Renew inquiry interim report.
6 Jun 2026Economy & Jobs (General)celebratoryIt has been a big week for the Oxford to Cambridge Growth Corridor. With the establishment of a centrally-led Development Corporation and the acquisition of the strategic Cambridge East brownfield site we can finally begin to realise the full potential of Greater Cambridge.
5 Jun 2026TransportmeasuredI have written to the Rail Minister, Lord Hendy, regarding the planned changes to Thameslink summer services through Greenwich and Woolwich 👇🏻
5 Jun 2026Health & NHScelebratoryThe Care Quality Commission this week upgraded the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Woolwich to ‘Good’. Always more to do but this is great news and reflects the leadership, energy and focus that have been applied to improving services and facilities at QEH. www.cqc.org.uk/location/RJ231
3 Jun 2026Housing & PlanningcelebratoryAlongside announcing the Greater Cambridge Development Corporation, Homes England and The Hill Group have today completed the acquisition of Cambridge East, a major strategic site that will support the delivery of more than 10k new homes.
3 Jun 2026Housing & PlanningcelebratoryWe are announcing today the establishment of a Greater Cambridge Development Corporation.   Working closely with local partners and communities, this Labour government will deliver high-quality, sustainable and nationally significant growth in Cambridge and its surrounding areas.
27 May 2026Energy & Net ZerocelebratoryOur Planning and Infrastructure Act judicial review reforms are bearing fruit. Last month, a challenge against the Stonestreet Green Solar DCO was dismissed by the High Court as ‘totally without merit’ saving months of needless delay on a project that will power c.42,000 homes.
19 May 2026Housing & PlanningmeasuredWe arrived in office with a bold and comprehensive plan to build the homes and infrastructure our country needs. We are faithfully executing that plan. It is beginning to bear fruit. While the headwinds are growing stronger, we are going to stay the course. Good to be back in Leeds for UKREiiF.
16 May 2026Crime & PolicingmeasuredI appreciate that many people will understandably be frightened by what they are seeing at the Unite the Kingdom demonstration today. The right to protest is fundamental. But it can’t be a cover for inciting hatred. We must stand against attempts to inflame and divide us.
14 May 2026Housing & PlanningcelebratoryThe Bill delivers on our manifesto commitments to prioritise the building of new social rented homes and better protect our existing stock. Further detail here 👇🏻 questions-statements.parliament.uk/written-stat...
14 May 2026Housing & PlanningcelebratoryWe have just introduced our Social Housing Bill to Parliament. At its heart are comprehensive reforms to the Right to Buy including exempting newly built social housing for 35 years. The Bill also increases protections for social tenants who are victims of domestic abuse.
13 May 2026Housing & PlanningcelebratoryThis Labour government is tackling the housing crisis. Our Social Housing Bill will protect precious social housing stock and incentivise the building of new social homes. Our Commonhold and Leasehold Reform Bill marks the beginning of the end for the feudal leasehold system.
12 May 2026Housing & PlanningmeasuredWe are.
12 May 2026MP & ParliamentmeasuredAfter last week’s election results, business as usual isn’t an option. If we don’t change, we will not be able to deliver on our promise to renew and rebuild our country. But recklessly triggering a formal challenge against the Prime Minister risks a descent into chaos.
8 May 2026Housing & PlanningmeasuredPrecisely what our new £39 billion Social and Affordable Homes Programme is doing.
8 May 2026MP & ParliamentmeasuredWe’ve lost exceptional councillors today and I want to thank them for their service. As Keir has acknowledged, the results have been tough. The electorate have sent us a clear message. We need to reflect, rally and show that we can change to renew the country as we promised.
5 May 2026non-politicalsarcasticPolanski’s cuddly Green Party latest. Choose hope, not hate. Vote Labour on Thursday 7 May.
2 May 2026Housing & PlanningdefensiveRead the speech.
2 May 2026Housing & PlanningmeasuredSee below. The Long Leases (Scotland) Act 2012 converted certain ultra-long leases into heritable right. Scotland had 12 years to deal with a small number of cases. We're dealing with millions of cases. It's just not comparable to the position in England and Wales.
2 May 2026Housing & PlanningmeasuredYou're comparing apples and oranges. Scotland never had the English property system of freehold and leasehold. It had a distinct system based on "heritable" title or outright ownership. The Abolition of Feudal Tenure etc. (Scotland) Act 2000 abolished feudal land tenure but wasn't a leasehold law.
2 May 2026Tax & Public FinancesmeasuredAs I reiterate in the speech, we can’t switch on the LFRA 2024 enfranchisement provisions until we’ve rectified through primary legislation the small number of specific but serious flaws the Tories left in that piece of legislation. Once we have, there will be no requirement to pay marriage value.
2 May 2026MP & ParliamentmeasuredYou’re more than welcome to email me but I’m afraid my diary is under severe pressure and I won’t be able to accommodate a meeting.
2 May 2026Housing & PlanningmeasuredThe outright abolition of leasehold overnight is almost certainly impossible and we won’t pretend otherwise. But this Labour government is bringing the feudal leasehold system to an orderly end in this Parliament. My @instituteforgov keynote speech 👇🏻 www.gov.uk/government/s...
