7 Jul 2026 Independent Schools: Regulation of Proprietors

I agree with the hon. Gentleman. It seems that this overseas company had no intention of educating our children in the UK, and legislation should be strengthened or put in place to stop this happening again. It is as though GGE saw the fallout of their decision to inform Malvern in advance and attempted to hide from an

7 Jul 2026 Independent Schools: Regulation of Proprietors

I am grateful for the opportunity to draw the House’s attention to a hugely concerning issue that has recently unfolded in my constituency: the sudden closure of Durham high school. The lack of communication and clarity from its owners, Galaxy Global Education, up until the very final moments of the school year left st

I thank my hon. Friend for the intervention. I completely agree. The way in which the company has acted towards pupils, parents and staff is outrageous. The least it could do is to provide some clarity and support going forward. Later in my speech, I will ask the Minister about some lessons that can be learned.

6 Jul 2026Procedure Committee — Oral Evidence (HC 48)

In your view, what particular difficulties are posed by named day questions compared with ordinary questions? What action can be taken to overcome those difficulties?

It might be that the Table Office is not further resourced. Your ministerial colleague at the Department for Education, Josh MacAlister, told us that he thinks the distinction should be removed so that there is only one type of WPQ. Do you agree?

6 Jul 2026 Civil Service Pensions

I have heard from dozens of my constituents across the City of Durham who have been impacted by either delayed or missing pension payments, and the number grows every day. A recent disturbing case centres around a chap who, sadly, has been diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s at just 46 years old. Ill health retirees

2 Jul 2026Business of the House

It has been more than two years since the devastating explosion at Coronation Terrace in Willington, and although the immediate emergency has long since passed, the impact on local residents continues. Families have had to live alongside an unsightly, derelict and potentially dangerous site, and there have been prolong

24 Jun 2026Procedure Committee — Oral Evidence (HC 49)

We have heard that Members are not particularly bothered about where the answer comes from; the issue is that it can sometimes take so long.

24 Jun 2026Procedure Committee — Oral Evidence (HC 49)

We have heard that there can be some ambiguity around Government blocks that are put in place on certain topics, and that that can be frustrating for Members. How could the Government be more effective at explaining the extent of those blocks directly to MPs?

24 Jun 2026Procedure Committee — Oral Evidence (HC 49)

When a WPQ is transferred to a different Department for an answer, how do the Government arrange it? Could it be done more efficiently? The Government have cited the need for transfers as the reason for the delays.

I can imagine your answers. [Laughter.]

In your view, what are the particular difficulties posed by named day questions compared to ordinary questions? Are there any suggestions around actions that could be taken to overcome those difficulties?

Given that named day questions caused such difficulties, do you think that that distinction should be maintained?

15 Jun 2026NHS Dentistry

I am grateful to the Backbench Business Committee for granting this debate, and I declare an interest as co-chair of the all-party parliamentary group for dentistry and oral health. I pay tribute to the British Dental Association, our secretariat, for the work it continues to undertake to keep NHS dentistry in the spot

11 Jun 2026Secondary Breast Cancer

It is a pleasure to serve under your chairmanship, Mr Betts. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to work with the hon. Member for Wokingham (Clive Jones) to secure this important debate. I thank the campaigners who work to ensure that people living with secondary breast cancer are seen, heard and supported. I am

In your written evidence, you suggest ending the pretence that ordinary WPQs are answered on the second sitting day after they are tabled. Can you give us a little more detail?

9 Jun 2026Backbench Business Committee — Oral Evidence (2026-06-09)

This application by Bob and myself, as co-chairs of the APPG on smoking and health, is for a debate focused on why the UK urgently needs a road map to a smoke-free country. While the Tobacco and Vapes Act 2026 is now law and will protect today’s children from the harms of tobacco, smoking is still the leading cause of

8 Jun 2026Violence against Women and Girls Strategy: Implementation

At my recent market stall at Durham Pride, local Labour members and I spoke to many people about the Government’s VAWG strategy. The message we received was clear: it is strongly welcomed but long overdue. The clock is ticking, and there is still no published timetable. When will the Government action the plan and the
