2 Jul 2025Energy Security and Net Zero Committee — Oral Evidence (HC 734)

To push that, it works if one community is doing it, but if every community is doing it, surely they are sourcing directly what would otherwise have come from another community. Does it actually make an overall difference? If every community is doing community wealth building, there cannot be a net benefit, can there?

29 Jun 2025Defence Procurement: SMEs

Basingstoke is home to some fantastic defence SMEs, including Nightball Technologies and Bertin Exensor, but one issue that has been raised with me is that Government procurement agencies cannot specify UK sovereign tech or sole-source contracts, even where UK capabilities exist. That results in lengthy competitive ten

18 Jun 2025Chalk Streams

I am grateful to the Minister for her response. In Hampshire, we are blessed with several rare and irreplaceable chalk streams, including the River Loddon, the River Itchen and the River Test. The Minister will be aware of the campaigns to secure greater protection for these irreplaceable habitats, including during the

18 Jun 2025 Warm Home Discount

I welcome the Minister’s statement. I think the shadow Minister was right to highlight this statement being made on the warmest day of the year—this is a Government announcing a warm home plan to literally fix the roof while the sun shines, which the Conservatives failed to do. This announcement will benefit nearly 3 m

18 Jun 2025 Business of the House

The evidence of the detrimental impact of smartphones on children’s mental health and wellbeing is overwhelming. Will the Leader of the House therefore join me in praising the more than 30 Basingstoke primary schools, including St Mark’s Church of England primary school and its headteacher Charles Applegate, for the sm

18 Jun 2025 UK Infrastructure: 10-year Strategy

I welcome the Chief Secretary’s statement. As someone whose parents and grandparents grew up in and lived in council housing and benefited from that opportunity, I particularly welcome the record investment in social and affordable housing. Under the previous Government, the UK was 28th out of 31 OECD countries for bus

18 Jun 2025Energy Security and Net Zero Committee — Oral Evidence (HC 734)

Do you think there is enough collaboration between the UK Government and the devolved Administrations in that process? Do you think people will understand who does what—whether the Welsh Government or the UK Government is in charge of delivering a net zero policy?

18 Jun 2025Energy Security and Net Zero Committee — Oral Evidence (HC 734)

Welcome to the panel. What lessons do you think the UK Government can learn from the devolved Administrations in the way that they communicate around climate and net zero?

18 Jun 2025Energy Security and Net Zero Committee — Oral Evidence (HC 734)

Essentially the message I got there was that the practice of how you deliver policy, and the actual content of the policy, are more important than the communications. That is where you have broadly focused; is that a fair reflection of what you have said?

18 Jun 2025Energy Security and Net Zero Committee — Oral Evidence (HC 734)

What is your assessment of how politicians talk about this? Do you think it reflects what you have said around public opinion? What would your advice be to a group of cross-party politicians about how they should talk about climate? What do you think of the Government’s communication strategy—and I do not mean just thi

18 Jun 2025Energy Security and Net Zero Committee — Oral Evidence (HC 734)

A final question from me: do you foresee trouble ahead, as climate impacts increase, or issues about the sophistication of messaging that is needed around climate mitigation and adaptation? That is quite a nuanced message to deliver.

18 Jun 2025Energy Security and Net Zero Committee — Oral Evidence (HC 734)

You have partly answered this, but I am interested in what you think is the most important factor in setting the narrative and driving public views on net zero policies. We have talked about a bit about events like Ukraine, the climate impacts, media stories and digital comms about net zero policies, and Government com

Thank you and welcome to the witnesses. FGS Global put out research recently that said that a third of the public are now sceptical of climate science. Does that sound right to you?
