Q12. Last week, the covid inquiry reported that 23,000 deaths occurred in England in the first wave of the pandemic that could have been prevented due to the UK response being too little, too late. Those were not just 23,000 deaths; they were 23,000 people who had family and friends who loved them, and valuable lives t

ICBs have not necessarily been given the resource they need that meets that local population.

That is really interesting. Do you think targeted intervention would be more effective?

Looking forward to the change in the workforce strategy, the previous long-term workforce plan showed the NHS broadly meeting workforce demand by 2036-37. Do you think that is an accurate forecast? Have there been significant changes in demand since that workforce plan was made that perhaps the new one should reflect?

I assume that the situation is fairly similar for community nursing in terms of data. A bit more widely, do you find that, if you look at regional disparities, those gaps tend to exist across the board, but in very specific communities, so if you are under-GPed you will be under-prescribing-pharmacisted and under-commu

That is lovely. Are there similar geographical gaps in nursing and pharmacy, and do you have the data that you need to be able to plot that?

You get people in supermarkets saying, “Can you have a look at my leg?” and so on.

Would you look at historical data as well? I do not want to harp on about my patch, but it is close to my heart. We are historically under-GPed. We have very unique geographical challenges, being so close to London. You can earn roughly £7,000 to £10,000 more a year if you just walk 10 feet up the road. Would historica

It is interesting. It reflects exactly what our very junior GPs have said to me, especially ones who are very new to the profession. They want to be working out of one practice. They do not want to be a locum.

To come back to the point that Alex made earlier that you do not need alcohol or cigarettes but you do need food, given some of the stuff that you have brought here today, do we need to come up with a definition of “food” when talking about what people need to sustain them, give them energy and allow them to carry on w

What kind of things do community organisations do?

They all interplay with each other. [Interruption.] I am being told that we need to move on.

Is there something about equipping people with the knowledge they need? We spoke about food labelling earlier. I know there are international examples—I think it is the Nutri-Score in France. I was talking to someone on the way in who said that they were recently on holiday in France and their kids said, “This is so mu

To pick up on the potential role of the Food Standards Agency, I know that a couple of the well-known takeaway apps provide a clear link to an establishment’s Food Standards Agency rating. It very clearly says, “This does not determine the content or quality of the food.” Is there a potential role for a rating system t

Is there a risk from corporate sponsorships being so heavily ingrained? If you have a healthy eating local community partnership sponsored by Coca-Cola or the golden arches, there will not be a financial gain for them but there is a reputational gain, as it links those two things as synonymous in someone’s mind.

I imagine it would be DCMS, but MHCLG could probably also answer fairly effectively. I know that some local museums are being funded via Pride in Place and towns fund funding.

Thank you very much, Chair. As you will see from the number of Members who have sponsored the application, local museums are a central part of all our communities—that will resonate with most Members here. They are really important for preserving shared heritage, celebrating local history and promoting pride in a local

Last week I had the honour of joining the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and Jan and Len—AKA Team Pritchard—in West Thurrock cemetery in my patch to learn more about their work. Thurrock has 82 Commonwealth war graves, and Jan and Len have volunteered to take care of them and make sure that all the names are visibl

Connecting into relevant community-based organisations will very much help with that conversation.
