11 Jun 2025Work and Pensions Committee — Oral Evidence (HC 653)

I am proud to have one of those trailblazers that you mentioned operating in my constituency, and I totally agree that it needs to be a local approach to drill down into what people need in that area, so I am happy to hear that. At the other end of the journey, if we have helped somebody along the way so they feel able

A warm welcome, Minister; it is great to have you with us today. I want to talk a little bit more about those further away from the labour market. We have touched on it already. In order to reach the 80% ambition of the Government, work needs to be done to support those people who can be in a place quite far away. You

10 Jun 2025Spending Review 2025

I warmly welcome the Chancellor’s statement and, like my hon. Friend the Member for Cardiff West (Mr Barros-Curtis), in particular the historic £445 million investment into rail in Wales. I also echo my hon. Friend’s thanks for the tireless representation of our Secretary of State for Wales and our Welsh Labour MPs. Fo

I thank the Minister for his statement, and for the extensive time he spent with the Work and Pensions Committee last week. Our inquiry on pensioner poverty has found that this issue is multifaceted and complex. Can the Minister assure me that he will work cross-Government on a policy that will ensure that pensioner po

Yes, but in a different part of Wales, because we have been to Cardiff. As a Welsh MP, you will be aware that a lot of things are done differently in Wales. While we were there, we met the Older People’s Commissioner for Wales, who has statutory powers to review policies and implementation. She is seen as an independen

Thank you. One of the places we have been on tour as part of our inquiry is that we have been to Wales.

Thank you. I was going to ask about the work conditionality requirements, but I think you have covered that in your answer already, so thank you, Minister.

4 Jun 2025Work and Pensions Committee — Oral Evidence (HC 465)

Thank you. It is good to know that that is being considered on the issue in the round as well. As you have rightly pointed out, there are often complexities that we, on the outside looking in, may not be aware of. That is really helpful. Staying with pension credit, but from a different perspective, another thing that

I think the point they were making was that as it stands when you come to the end of universal credit you then need to make a fresh claim for pension credit and is that necessary or could one dovetail into the other. I think that is the point that they were making on that, more to do with the administrative side.

4 Jun 2025Work and Pensions Committee — Oral Evidence (HC 465)

That sounds really positive and I think that is broadly the point that was being made, that you kind of fall off the edge of one system and you start again with another and whether the flow could be better between the two. Thank you, that is really helpful. Another suggestion that we have had for streamlining the proce

4 Jun 2025Work and Pensions Committee — Oral Evidence (HC 465)

Welcome, Minister. Thank you for joining us today. I want to stay on pension credit and talk about other opportunities to streamline the system that have come up during the course of the inquiry. One was from the IFS, who suggest that it would be advantageous to make it easier for working-age people on universal credit

Just to be clear, do you put that decrease in volume directly down to the additional barriers that were put up since leaving the EU?

As a model, do you think that is something that would help with the issue that we are looking at in particular to do with pensioners?

4 Jun 2025Welsh Affairs Committee — Oral Evidence (HC 785)

Going back to trade, and in particular UK and EU trade, we have had the UK-EU reset deal very recently, which my colleague will touch on in a moment. Putting that aside for now, how has Welsh agricultural trade evolved since the UK left the EU?

We also heard from Age Cymru and Care & Repair Cymru during the session as well. One of the things that they mentioned was the Welsh Government strategy for an ageing society, which they say has encouraged more cross-departmental work. Of course, this Government have made clear that we are a mission-based Government an

It is a pleasure to serve under your chairship, Sir John. I will start by thanking my hon. Friend the Member for Hendon (David Pinto-Duschinsky) for introducing this important debate on an issue that affects so many across the UK. I would like to focus on the real human impact, and the effect that the crime can have on
