A consistent Conservative loyalist with no rebel votes, Rankin has nonetheless been active on a number of fronts recently. In March 2026, he voted alongside his party to support Lords amendments to the Victims and Courts Bill -- backing protections the government wanted to strip out -- and voted for opposition motions criticising the government's approach to defence spending and North Sea oil and gas policy. Beyond the division lobbies, he has drawn local and national attention for publicly opposing Heathrow's third runway expansion, citing noise and quality-of-life concerns for Windsor residents, and for pressing the Foreign Secretary to reimburse Windsor's council for the costs of hosting state visits. His most notable recent controversy came in early 2025, when the BBC reported he had accepted free racecourse tickets shortly before speaking in Parliament in defence of racecourses and against gambling regulations -- a story that raised questions about conflicts of interest, though Rankin defended the gifts as appropriate.

At 68% voting participation, Rankin falls below the Commons average. He votes 100% in line with Conservative Party positions where he does participate. His voting profile shows strong alignment with anti-tax stances (100%) and Lords scrutiny (100%), and he sits somewhat above his party average on criminal justice reform and immigration control. His 12 parliamentary speeches -- with economy and jobs the most frequent topic -- indicate a selective rather than prolific contributor.
