Dispatch
Apr 2026

Won by Lab in its first election in 2024.

Joani Reid is facing the most serious crisis of her brief parliamentary career. In April 2026, multiple news outlets reported that her husband had been arrested on espionage charges linked to China, and that she had allegedly behaved inappropriately with senior Royal Navy officers during a visit to a nuclear facility. She subsequently resigned from the Armed Forces Parliamentary Scheme, and the Labour whip -- under which she had been elected in July 2024 -- was suspended, leaving her sitting as an independent. Opposition MPs have called on the Defence Secretary to intervene, with some arguing she has put national security at risk. No charges against Reid herself have been reported, but the fallout has dominated coverage of her in 2026.

Before this controversy consumed her public profile, Reid was a broadly government-aligned MP. Voting at 68% -- somewhat below the Commons average -- she supported the government's agenda on progressive taxation, housing development, and climate measures with near-total consistency. She was notably pro-assisted dying access and strongly backed fraud recovery measures. Her handful of rebel votes were minor: she broke with her then-Labour colleagues on two Industry and Exports Bill amendments in February 2026 and on a Sentencing Bill Lords amendment in January. Her 66 parliamentary contributions spanned economy, crime, and social care debates, and she sits on the Home Affairs Committee.
