A marginal seat — won by just 2,313 votes (4.7%) in 2024. Centred on Croydon. Population 102,748, highly educated (46% degree-holders).

Philp's most striking recent action was crossing party lines on the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill in June 2025, voting in favour of the Bill's passage and backing amendments that liberalised the assisted dying framework -- a position that places him 77 percentage points away from his Conservative colleagues on the issue. As shadow home secretary, he is one of the more prominent opposition figures on crime and immigration, with recent coverage -- largely from Inside Croydon -- raising serious allegations including claims he privately acknowledged Brexit weakened immigration controls while publicly arguing the opposite, and that he opposed local development publicly while his party benefited from building projects nearby. He has also drawn criticism for his response to the Gaza conflict and for perceived unprofessionalism at a paid Conservative conference event.

At 62% voting participation, Philp sits below the Commons average, though his shadow ministerial role accounts for some of that. He votes with Conservative positions 96% of the time outside his assisted dying deviation, and is strongly aligned with anti-tax, pro-business, and pro-civil-liberties stances. His speeches concentrate heavily on crime (55 contributions) and immigration (44), consistent with his shadow home secretary brief, with defence, local government, and economic matters also featuring regularly.
