A Lab seat since 2010, held for 5 consecutive elections. Centred on Birmingham. Population 110,574, notably young (median age 27 vs 41 nationally), a majority-minority constituency. Recorded crime is 231% above the national average. Median income £25K (below average), 11,035 businesses.

A Cabinet minister first and MP second, Shabana Mahmood has spent recent months generating controversy from the centre of government. As Home Secretary, she has faced the sharpest criticism over immigration: her deportation expansion programme -- including accelerated removals to Nigeria -- has drawn legal challenges and opposition from Labour's left wing. One prominent commentator compared her approach to Suella Braverman's. Against that, she led a well-received decision in April to scrap police investigations of legal social media posts, redirecting resources toward actual crime. Her five rebel votes on 20 June 2025, all on the assisted dying bill, show she is willing to break from Labour's majority on conscience issues -- she voted to tighten eligibility safeguards around voluntary stopping of eating and drinking, suggesting a cautious rather than expansionist position on access.

Her parliamentary participation rate is striking: she has voted in just 26% of divisions (133 of 515), well below the Commons average -- a pattern common among senior ministers whose time is consumed by departmental work. When she does vote, she backs Labour 91% of the time. Her 857 contributions across 74 debates are dominated by crime (68 speeches) and immigration (23), reflecting her brief. She sits on no select committees.
