28 Apr 2025Public Accounts Committee — Oral Evidence (HC 716)

This is a question for David Williams. I wonder whether you have undertaken the planned force testing of this support in the last year as part of your capability planning processes.

31 Mar 2025 Access to Dentistry: Somerset

The area around Minehead, in my constituency, has the smallest number of dentists in the country. Does my hon. Friend agree that the fact that the area is both rural and coastal presents a unique set of problems because of deprivation and neglect, which means that the dental desert there is felt very acutely indeed?

31 Mar 2025 Access to Dentistry: Somerset

In Minehead, in my constituency, a dental surgery responded to the ICB in October and said that it would provide 12 NHS appointments a week for people who currently do not have a dentist. I have chased that ICB on five occasions, but we still do not have a result. That is 48 appointments a month that my constituents ar

25 Mar 2025 Veterinary Products in Waterways

I thank the hon. Member for his interesting intervention. I agree, and I will talk about farmers in particular in a moment. It is also important to note that the economic cost of mitigating the environmental and health impacts of these chemicals is substantial. Water bills are set to rise precipitously this year, causi

I am coming on to that later, but the hon. Member is absolutely right. It is also important to note that the economic costs of mitigating the environmental and health impacts of these chemicals are substantial.

25 Mar 2025 Veterinary Products in Waterways

I am delighted to secure my first Adjournment debate, and for it to be about veterinary products in waterways, specifically neonicotinoids such as fipronil and imidacloprid. From now on, for your sake and mine, Madam Deputy Speaker, I shall be referring to these neonicotinoids as neonics. I have been extremely keen to

20 Mar 2025Public Accounts Committee — Oral Evidence (HC 363)

I have Hinkley A, B and C in my constituency and I recently visited all three of them. I had absolutely wonderful visits to Hinkley A and B. I would like to put on record the name Nicola Fauvel, who runs Hinkley B. She was immaculate. She knew her staff and the problems. Mark Pitts unfortunately suffered a heart attack

12 Mar 2025 Rural Communities: Government Support

Thank you for calling me to speak, Dr Murrison, and it was lovely to see you last night. [Laughter.] No, no, but it is a pleasure to serve under your chairmanship. Obviously, I thank my hon. Friend the Member for South Devon (Caroline Voaden) for securing this vital debate. It is always excellent to see so many of my L

11 Mar 2025English Rugby Union: Governance

It is a pleasure to speak in this debate. I thank the hon. Member for Camborne and Redruth (Perran Moon) for raising the issue of the state of governance of rugby union in England. I have some wonderful rugby clubs in the constituency I am proud to represent—Tiverton and Minehead—including Tiverton, Minehead Barbarians

10 Mar 2025Public Accounts Committee — Oral Evidence (HC 643)

On what you just said, my party leader, Ed Davey, said exactly that to me when I signed a letter supporting the wealth tax—by accident—so I wholeheartedly endorse that kind of leadership. As you have admitted, the timeline for some of your ambitions, particularly the 2025 one, is tight. What are the implications of the

It is worth really noting what you just said about the cost in terms of it not just being about how much people get paid, but how much money you save in the long term. You cited the British Library, and the cost of 40% of its reserves, £6 million or £7 million. That is a drop in the ocean of what it would cost if there

4 Mar 2025 Bathing Water Regulations

My constituency of Tiverton and Minehead neighbours the patch of my hon. Friend the Member for Taunton and Wellington (Gideon Amos). Very recently, one of my constituents shared a harrowing story with me, in which his children fell seriously ill after swimming in a local river last summer. These public health risks are

3 Mar 2025Independent Schools: VAT and Business Rates Relief

Will the hon. Member give up on all this stuff about Eton? I speak as a mother of two Old Etonians. I was a single parent; I worked three jobs. The right hon. Member for East Hampshire (Damian Hinds) said there is more money from Old Etonian parents, but there certainly is not—not from this one. Eton hands out complete

3 Mar 2025Independent Schools: VAT and Business Rates Relief

It is a joy to speak under your chairmanship, Ms Lewell-Buck. I will be brief. I grew up the eldest of four children, and the only girl. My brothers and I were all grateful recipients of scholarships and bursaries to public schools. I am, believe it or not, a Cheltenham lady, and my brothers all attended King’s, Canter

3 Mar 2025Independent Schools: VAT and Business Rates Relief

I thank my hon. Friend for his interesting and adept intervention. I will be coming to that matter in a minute. There are some shocking—shocking—statistics on this from the Conservative party in Devon. This policy will immeasurably increase the strain on the state school system, which is already bursting at the seams,
