10 Feb 2026Home Affairs Committee — Oral Evidence (HC 1690)

Essentially, do you think that we are putting sufficient resources into the training of our senior police officers?

10 Feb 2026Home Affairs Committee — Oral Evidence (HC 1690)

Hello. I am sorry to have been delayed. I am Peter Prinsley, the MP for Bury St Edmunds and Stowmarket. Looking at the police reform White Paper, I understand that there is going to be a new strategy for recruiting graduates. Is that so? How do you see recruitment changing and assisting with your endeavours? Are we rec

9 Feb 2026Brain Tumour Survival Rates

I cannot understand how there can be a relationship between head injury and brain tumour. Repeated injury causes some neurological conditions, particularly for footballers, whom we see getting early dementia, but I do not see a connection between head injury and brain tumour. Does the shadow Minister?

Yes, I am in awe that my hon. Friend has managed to achieve so much; you see, Madam Deputy Speaker, I am a new Member of Parliament! Let us encourage clinical trials, for as Lord Vallance has said: “Clinical trials are the route by which promising research can be turned into treatments”, which will save lives.

It is an honour to speak in this debate. I thank my hon. Friend the Member for Mitcham and Morden (Dame Siobhain McDonagh) and the hon. Member for Witney (Charlie Maynard) for securing it. We have heard many fine and very heartfelt speeches this evening, particularly those recounting personal stories about Members’ fam

9 Feb 2026Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps

Given Iranian malign influence on the streets of London, Iran’s web of proxies, the menace that it poses to world peace, and recent reports that as many as 30,000 protesters may have been killed by the IRGC, will the UK join the EU, the United States, Canada and Ukraine in imposing further sanctions? Is it not time for

5 Feb 2026Road Safety

We spoke about the graduated driving licence scheme in a Westminster Hall debate and referred to the situation in Western Australia and Victoria. Does the hon. Member agree that the lessons we can learn from there have absolute relevance to the situation here?

5 Feb 2026 Occupied Palestinian Territories: Genocide Risk Assessment

I thank the hon. Member for Argyll, Bute and South Lochaber (Brendan O’Hara) for bringing forward this most important debate. This is a debate on an obligation to assess the risk of genocide. Who could disagree with that? There has been a terrible war in Gaza, and although there is a ceasefire, loss of life continues.

5 Feb 2026 National Cancer Plan

What a brilliant plan, and I congratulate the Minister on bringing it to the House this afternoon. However, cancer trials need clinical academics, and we have a crisis in clinical academic recruitment, retention and funding. Does she agree that we must find ways to encourage young clinicians into academic and research

If a child came to the UK aged 10 and their parents do not achieve settlement for 15 years, when would the child receive settled status?

4 Feb 2026Home Affairs Committee — Oral Evidence (HC 505)

We heard yesterday that sometimes there are families with several children. We understand that there is a necessity to reapply every two and a half years, and the fees every two and a half years are substantial. We heard of situations where the family could not afford to make the application for all of the children, an

I absolutely get that. Some changes have already been put in place, and I understand that net migration may be falling to very low levels already. Do you anticipate that, say by the end of this year, we may be in a situation where we have more people leaving the country than arriving?

4 Feb 2026Home Affairs Committee — Oral Evidence (HC 505)

We heard yesterday from a number of expert witnesses who spoke to us about issues relating to children and young people. Some of it was pretty upsetting, frankly. The single phrase that I went home with was the idea that there was “state-sponsored unwantedness”, and a feeling that there were hundreds of thousands of ch

I agree with that, but do you recognise that the scale of the fees is a problem for some of the families?

4 Feb 2026Lord Mandelson

The hon. Member is giving a historical perspective, which I am sure we all appreciate. It seems that Mr Mandelson is a serial liar. Does the hon. Member agree that the Prime Minister said this morning that Mr Mandelson lied, lied and lied to him? Who in this House has never been lied to?

4 Feb 2026Home Affairs Committee — Oral Evidence (HC 505)

Thank you for coming this morning, Home Secretary. Why are high earners more useful citizens than people who are not high earners?

22
4 Feb 2026Home Affairs Committee — Oral Evidence (HC 505)

I quite understand that, but the demand for workers in this country is not always for high earners. We have large numbers of people, for instance, working in the care sector, who are not high earners but are nevertheless extremely useful members of society. We need to be able to attract people to come to work in those
