4 Feb 2025Justice Committee — Oral Evidence (HC 469)

Briefly on that point, is there any suggestion, information or evidence to suggest that that has a negative impact on mental health? I would think that it has a knock-on effect with rehabilitation. Would you say that is fair?

What does that look like in reality? Have you got any examples of good purposeful activity being offered anywhere?

That’s interesting. Would you say that at the moment it is adequate for IPP prisoners, or not? It is not necessarily adequate for the people who are in other categories that have a long time left, because the IPP prisoners are getting priority, if you like, but it is not adequate for them in any event.

Forgive me if I am misunderstanding, but I have heard the word “inconsistency”, and you, Pia, were originally talking about thinking skills and looking at why people acted as they have, and what led them there; but I also hear that there is not always a programme available in a particular prison. For example, domestic

That nicely moves on to purposeful activity, as well—getting activity in place that will help with that in the future. We talk a lot here in Parliament about purposeful activity, but would one of you outline what it means in practice?

You mean not just IPP prisoners but others will get missed.

4 Feb 2025Justice Committee — Oral Evidence (HC 469)

You mentioned that open prisons tend to be where purposeful activity is drilled down and there are some good examples, but, if we look at the other end of the spectrum and prisoners on IPP sentences, clearly they need to show they have made progress. When we went to Buckley Hall and HMP Brixton they had special units d

That is very interesting. Thank you. We are talking in general terms about purposeful activity. We have touched on IPP, category C and what have you, but what we have not touched on is how purposeful activity does or does not differ, and whether it is adequate, for women and the youth estate. There are probably two sep

And young people?

I am thinking exactly that. People and organisations are willing and ready to support our prisons and there are reports telling us that prisons are not providing it. If only they could.

Absolutely. I think we were planning to move on to contracted services. Pam has an interest in this.

Good afternoon. My name is Linsey Farnsworth. I am a non-practising solicitor, formerly of the Crown Prosecution Service. I am a member of a number of unions, including the FDA.

If I can take you back to adults, I am interested in particular in rehabilitative programmes in prisons. Starting with behaviour programmes, or interventions, as I think they are also called, could one of you give a brief overview of offender behaviour programmes—what they are, how they are accessed and what sort of co

17 Jan 2025New Homes (Solar Generation) Bill

I pay tribute to the hon. Member for Cheltenham (Max Wilkinson) for bringing forward this Bill on a subject of great importance. I know from personal experience the time and effort it must have taken to get to this stage. I am sure Members on both sides of the House will agree that solar is a key tool in the renewable

I would encourage the Minister to respond, because I do not think that it is for me to do so. However, I do think we should be doing everything we can to move towards a better, more sustainable future. Not only are we building 1.5 million new homes over this Parliament, but we are committed to an ambitious decarbonisin

17 Jan 2025Licensing Hours Extension Bill

We heard that licensing hours could not be extended for the Lionesses game because Parliament was not sitting. Does my hon. Friend agree that the changes in the Bill will give us the flexibility to ensure that, on such occasions, fans will be able watch games while supporting our pubs? We also have an opportunity today

17 Jan 2025 Absent Voting (Elections in Scotland and Wales) Bill

I am in the fortunate position of being the neighbouring MP, so you may well be familiar with the school I mention, which is just down the road from your constituency. Will you commend Langley Mill academy for its great work to raise awareness among young people of British values and our voting system, and sadly for pu

Can I bring it back to an area that is particularly important to me as the mission delivery champion for safer streets but, more importantly, to my constituents in Amber Valley? That is the mission to make our streets safer and the ambitious target—we have already talked about ambitious Government policy—to halve viole
