5 Nov 2025Health and Social Care Committee — Oral Evidence (HC 1181)

What do you say in response to Chris’s point? He asked how someone would choose healthy food in that situation. Is that a bit of a cop-out, or is Chris right that there is no chance for somebody to eat healthily if they come from the socioeconomic background that he has just described—at the moment?

I want to be really clear about your view. To use your two examples, are you saying that any amount of Coca-Cola or any spoonful of Coco Pops is bad for you, or can they be part of a wider diet? If we just focus on food and do not talk about the wider diet, is there not a danger that we end up taking away personal resp

I do not know who this question should be for, so maybe someone wants to jump in. If the Government had limited resource and decided that they needed to do something about obesity, are you saying that this is where they should focus their efforts rather than, say, promoting walking, running, and eating as a family rath

Professor van Tulleken, the House of Lords Committee suggested that we—the United Kingdom—need to do more research on UPFs, and poor diet and health, and the relationship between them. You seem to be saying, “Well, the evidence is clear. The evidence is there. UPFs are bad for us and the food industry”—I am paraphrasin

4 Nov 2025Supporting High Streets

My hon. Friend talks eloquently about the problems facing high streets. One of my constituents, a publican, told me that things were worse than during covid, because at least there was financial support during covid. Now, pubs and other hospitality businesses are being hung out to dry.

4 Nov 2025Backbench Business Committee — Oral Evidence (2025-11-04)

In that case I shall leave it there, other than to say that I am sure that the Committee is aware of the real crisis that is happening in SEND. There is a cross-party desire to get something sorted and improve it, so I ask that we have this debate in relatively short order before the White Paper on SEND is published, s

4 Nov 2025Backbench Business Committee — Oral Evidence (2025-11-04)

I am seeking a Backbench Business debate on special educational needs and disabilities. I declare an interest as vice-chair of the all-party parliamentary group for SEND. I have 32 sponsors, across the parties, for this debate. I am sure that all members of the Committee, like me and the co-sponsors, will realise what

I entirely agree. The truth is that Labour does not have the backing of small and medium-sized businesses because it is stifling growth with its costly net zero commitments, layers of red tape, changes to the living wage, cuts to business rate relief, the Employment Rights Bill and higher national insurance contributio

Picture this: Downing Street, a hub of activity, alive with purpose, people moving with intent, heated debate and entrepreneurship at every turn. You look confused, Madam Deputy Speaker. I am not talking about the Downing Street here in SW1, but Downing Street in Farnham, where the high street starts and where the most

I have listened to the hon. Member’s speech very carefully, but I think I missed him mentioning the £19.5 million of levelling-up funding that Weymouth got in 2023 under the last Conservative Government.

If it is not prescriptive on the solution, I am sure we can do that.

I have a similar problem in Farnham. We are being hit by the headwinds of what is going on nationally, but the Farnham infrastructure programme means there is disruption locally. Now, we all welcome the outcome, but what we have a problem with is Lib Dem-run Waverley council whacking up car parking charges, which is de

4 Nov 2025Backbench Business Committee — Oral Evidence (2025-11-04)

That is a fair challenge. The reality is that SEND is not a party political issue, but there will undoubtedly be disagreements, or at least varying opinions, about what the right answer is. A Backbench Business debate will take the politics out of it and allow us to have a cross-party discussion; I am not saying that p

3 Nov 2025 Public Office (Accountability) Bill

As a six-year-old, I remember the death of Joe McCarthy, who lived on my road in west London, so it is not just about those who lived in Sheffield or elsewhere. It affected everyone across the country, and this Bill is so important for that reason.

Following on from that, are there things from a neighbourhood health perspective that are not being delivered or commissioned, or for which the workforce isn’t there yet, that would need to happen in order to achieve some of that?

29 Oct 2025Health and Social Care Committee — Oral Evidence (HC 1180)

What do you see as the opportunities of a neighbourhood health service to support the shift to prevention and address inequalities in healthy life expectancy? Specifically, how will it need to approach service delivery and workforce planning to support those shifts?

Thank you very much. Hopefully the Cabinet Secretary will not be on the phone.

I might come on to that money point in a second. To go back to the departmental level of this, are there exemplar Departments out there that really get this and are doing things to get it? Are there ones that really don’t see this as a whole-Government approach, and really don’t follow up on the stuff that you are talk
