22 Apr 2025Foreign Affairs Committee — Oral Evidence (HC 488)

In terms of how the IDF or the Government are perpetrating the conflict in Gaza—how they are carrying out the war in Gaza—how effective is that at delivering those outcomes? If, as you have stated, the only outcome is a sense of security and the return of the prisoners—

You raise an interesting point that some of the hostages, unfortunately many of them dead, were released under a ceasefire agreement.

I am interested in the casualty rates that we see reported by the United Nations and their accuracy. We see numbers in excess of 60,000 civilian deaths, including 15,000 children. Are those numbers recognised by your party or by Israeli public opinion?

22 Apr 2025Foreign Affairs Committee — Oral Evidence (HC 488)

Let us extrapolate from that. One of the stated aims that you outlined earlier was the eradication of Hamas. If you are not able to distinguish between a civilian death and the death of a Hamas combatant, what number do the Government recognise as fatalities for the area? The biggest issue we have is that the only numb

Can we talk about access for aid? Obviously, if I accept your principle that the Government are not trying to target civilians, why are there constraints on the amount of aid that is getting into the Gaza strip? That seems like a deliberate targeting of civilians, if that is humanitarian aid for the population.

Thank you for joining us. It would be helpful to understand what you believe the aims of the Israeli Government are in the conflict in Gaza. What are their stated aims? To what extent is the way in which they are perpetrating the conflict likely to deliver those outcomes?

6 Apr 2025 Israel: Refusal of Entry for UK Parliamentarians

It is my honour and privilege to serve on the Foreign Affairs Committee with the hon. Member for Sheffield Central (Abtisam Mohamed), and I put on record my support for her and my outrage at her treatment. Given that this is how the current Israeli Government act towards their allies, disregarding democratic and diplom

Ukraine is also seeking EU membership and NATO membership. Earlier, you outlined the importance of the Euro-Atlantic pathway. Is membership of those two organisations, in your mind, the only true deterrent to Russian aggression?

At a time when we are talking about the possibility of negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, is there a lesson that Ukraine should learn from Georgian negotiations with Russia?

Madam President, Russian interference in Georgia predates the most recent crisis. I am interested in the 2008 Russia-Georgia conflict. To what extent do you feel the response by the UK, Europe and the west was appropriate, given Russian aggression? Do you believe that response influenced Vladimir Putin’s future actions

To the point about having to pivot to a different strategy, we have seen Russia occupying Crimea and we have seen Russian activity in Moldova and other countries. To what extent has Russia been able to influence Georgian politics through the breakaway states of South Ossetia and Abkhazia? Has that given Russia any leve

The maintenance and upkeep of the 6,000 properties that constitute the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office’s overseas estate is estimated to cost £250 million a year. In recent years, that has been funded through the sale of assets. Drawdown on the receipts of those sales is due to run out either this year or

I take the right hon. Gentleman’s point about creating parity between academic and technical education. Would a useful step in the direction of attracting people into the apprenticeship scheme be to ensure that they are paid the national minimum wage in line with their age group?

26 Mar 2025 UK-China Relations

To answer the question from the hon. Member for Farnham and Bordon, 35% of China’s energy is renewable energy, which is up from 0% 15 years ago. By the end of this decade, given the rate at which it is expanding, China will be responsible for 60% of the globe’s renewable energy production.

The China audit was due to be published earlier this year. I understand it is now slated for the summer. Will the Minister take this opportunity to confirm when it will be published? Will she also, moreover, confirm that the Foreign Secretary will appear before the Foreign Affairs Committee to answer questions about it

25 Mar 2025 Nutrition for Growth Summit

It is a pleasure to serve under your chairship, Ms Jardine. I congratulate the right hon. Member for Dumfriesshire, Clydesdale and Tweeddale (David Mundell) on securing this important debate. Malnutrition is one of the greatest barriers to health, economic growth and development worldwide. It contributes to nearly half
