21 May 2025Welsh Affairs Committee — Oral Evidence (HC 702)

Prisons, by their very nature, are designed to keep people in. That is a description I am sure everybody would agree with on a very basic level. One of the really astonishing revelations has been the fact that they are struggling to keep things out, which implicitly we would expect prisons to be very capable of doing.

To follow up on that—you mentioned January 2024—the second half of the question was about how issues have evolved since last year. Can you answer that part of the question?

21 May 2025Welsh Affairs Committee — Oral Evidence (HC 702)

Good afternoon, prynhawn da. Our predecessor Welsh Affairs Committee ran an inquiry into prisons in 2024. Since then, clearly, there has been a change in Government and the capacity crisis has continued to mount significant operational challenges. What are the most significant challenges facing the Welsh prison estate

19 May 2025Pensions: Expatriates

David Lloyd George created the social contract on which our pension scheme still runs, and I am sure he would be proud to hear my hon. Friend calling for that social contract to be adhered to. Several hon. Members have drawn attention to the fact that we now have many constituents living abroad who have the right to vo

14 May 2025Welsh Affairs Committee — Oral Evidence (HC 444)

Welsh food and drink exports have fallen by 18% since 2018. I was wondering what the comparative figures are for your region and nation? You might not have them off the top of your head, but generally you might know the trend. Specifically talking about working with other Government Departments, I was wondering what yo

How does the Scottish Government assess the performance of its overseas offices?

14 May 2025Welsh Affairs Committee — Oral Evidence (HC 444)

Yes. Joe, it is very welcome news that lots of FDI is coming into Greater Manchester and the food and drink sector there. I was wondering if you could expand a bit more on what that FDI is resulting in. Is it just resulting in acquisitions and people building a stake in the companies? What else are they doing with the

13 May 2025 Carer’s Leave

I absolutely agree. We have already heard in this debate some of the personal stories of people involved in caring and the challenges that they are taking on. The hon. Lady was quite right to point to the financial figures and the impact that this situation is having on our economy. For example, Powys Teaching Health B

It is a pleasure to serve under your chairmanship, Mr Stringer. I thank my hon. 7 May 2025Cold and Damp Homes

It is an honour to serve under your chairmanship, Mr Western. I thank the hon. Member for Leeds Central and Headingley (Alex Sobel) for securing this important debate. As he rightly set out, many of our issues stem from the fact that so much of our housing stock dates to the Georgian and Victorian periods. I draw atten
