14 May 2025Welsh Affairs Committee — Oral Evidence (HC 444)

May I go back to the topic of data with you, Mr Manning? You talked about the importance of an evidence-based approach for your organisation. Could you just tell us a bit more about how you go about making sure that the data that you collect is meaningful and accurate? How do you do that?

I have a very brief follow-up to something you mentioned before. This is to Mr Hallan. One thing that Wales and Scotland have in common is rurality. Going back to what you were telling Andrew about businesses wanting to be located near to other businesses and you have that clustering approach, how much of a challenge h

Mr Manning, to follow on from that, how do you co-ordinate the work that you are doing between the Greater Manchester Combined Authority and the UK Government? You just talked about your devolved arrangements. Could you just spell out a little bit more about how you co-ordinate that work between the two?

I have one quick follow-up question on that work you are doing there. You talk about the long-term strategy and the cluster-based approach. Have you had much involvement around the UK Government’s industrial strategy at all?

As part of that work, are you also then working with the UK Government?

Welsh universities, including Bangor University, face very real challenges as a direct result of policies introduced by the last UK Government. Will the Minister update us on conversations that her Department is having with the Welsh Government around higher education in Wales?

Rydych chi wedi sôn dipyn am heriau S4C. Beth ydych chi’n meddwl fydd yr heriau mwyaf i chi fel Cadeirydd drwy’ch tymor? (Translation) You have talked a little bit about the challenges that S4C faces. What do you think will be the biggest challenges for you as Chair during your term?

Sut ydych chi’n meddwl byddwch chi’n goresgyn yr heriau yma, yn enwedig efo pobl ifanc? Pa bethau ydych chi’n meddwl fyddwch chi’n eu gwneud efo’r tîm? (Translation) How do you think you could overcome those challenges, particularly with young people? What things would you do with the team?

2 Apr 2025Welsh Affairs Committee — Oral Evidence (HC 560)

My question is for Mr Banton and Mr Cox. Critical minerals and precious metals are on everyone’s agenda at the minute. What scope is there for recovering metals and other materials from mine waste or other industrial sites in Wales?

That would be great. Diolch. Thank you.

Could I ask Mary or Nadia to come in on that, if you have anything to add on the potential for metals recovery?

If there was not a specific planning application, that testing would more than likely not be happening unless a local authority had taken it upon themselves to do it.

2 Apr 2025Welsh Affairs Committee — Oral Evidence (HC 560)

As far as you are aware, is much of that testing work going on around these kinds of sites that the NRW is involved in?

2 Apr 2025Welsh Affairs Committee — Oral Evidence (HC 560)

I have a question for Mr Banton to begin with and then I will go to Nadia De Longhi. As we heard in the last panel, there are concerns across Wales about the issue of toxic chemicals being dumped. There are some concerns that that has perhaps happened in former quarries, such as Ty Llwyd. How much of a priority is that

Can I ask a quick follow-up to that, Kirsty? In terms of PCBs, as you know, there is growing awareness of them. You just talked about a data gap in terms of not knowing what is going on. How seriously are we taking the risk that these chemicals pose to communities that are living near sites such as those you just menti
